Bend is on the east slope of the Cascade Mountains, smack dab in the middle of Oregon. Ride gravity assisted singletrack from the Cascade Crest through mixed conifer and ponderosa forests back down to Bend.

Cog Wild Bicycle Tours offers daily shuttles up the Cascade Lakes Highway starting in late May and running through October.

With three drop off spots there’s a super fun route waiting for you no matter your fitness or riding style.

Select one of the following three drop-off locations below. Then link up trails for a gravity assisted cross country ride back to Cog Wild’s HQ on the Westside of Bend.

E-bikes are not permitted on USFS non-motorized trails in this area.

1. Lowest drop off: Wanoga

Average ride is 2 to 3+ hours with 15 to 20 miles of riding. The Wanoga Trails are purpose built by machine for mountain bikers. The most popular trails from this drop are:

  • Tiddlywinks: Flow trail with berms and jumps.
  • Funner: Lava tech with rock drops.
  • Tyler’s Traverse: Berms, jumps, rock features, fun.

2. Middle drop off: Swampy Lake

Average ride is 3 to 4+ hours with 20 to 25 miles of riding. The Swampy Trails are natural, mixed use trails. Most riders start their rides on:

  • South Fork – natural rocks and roots, super fun descent to Tumalo Falls.
  • Swede Ridge – rolling ridge descending to Upper Whoops & Lower Whoops, both super fun descents with berms and jumps.

3. highest drop-off: Dutchman FlAT

Average ride is 4 to 6 hours with a minimum of 25 miles of riding.

  • Metolius Windigo – In early summer when the snow melts, traverse the subalpine zone from Dutchman to Mrazek for an epic ride with over 40 miles of singletrack.
  • Flagline – Flagline is one of our favorite trails: ride rolling terrain through old growth hemlock with huge mountain views before connecting to the Swampy Trails. Heads up: this trail opens on August 15 and is closed before that to provide elk-calving habitat. Please respect the closure.

Vacation Rental Homes

There are many rental home options in Bend. We recommend staying on the Westside of town, which is near the trails and downtown. Visit Bend has recommended places listed. Here are a few reccomened companies in addition to AirBnB and VRBO:

Camping

Camp grounds near Bend are limited and book up early, so reserve your spot well in advance. Bend has 2 public pools, Juniper Pool and Larkspur Community center both managed by Bend Park and Recreation. Purchase a day pass for showers and more.

  • Tumalo State Park is the only full service campground that is open the entire biking season. It is 6 miles north of Bend and a similar distance to the trails.
  • During the later summer/fall months, there are many lakeside campgrounds along the Cascade Lakes Highway west of Bend including Sparks Lake and Elk Lake.
  • Dispersed camping has become very popular on the Deschutes National Forest west of Bend. If you choose this option please mind your fire and your waste.
